On 7 things from last week (12/4/23)

Watch

  1. House of Kardashian. I just plain don’t know much about the whole Jenner-Kardashian clan, so this brief docu-series was an informative, if painfully biased, watch.
  2. Cars. Dir. Pete Docter. I’ve now watched the Pixar film at least seven times through, thanks to an enthusiastic toddler in my house. And you know what? Sure, it’s a crass bid to sell merch…but it’s also an OK movie.
  3. Julliard Jazz Prof Hears Nirvana for the First Time. YouTube. No actual interest in taking drumming classes—or whatever this video is attempting to sell me on—but I was riveted to watch this incredible drummer work his way through “In Bloom”—and then to hear how magnificent Dave Grohl’s work really is.

Read

  1. Pachinko. Min Jin Lee. A delightful and melancholy generation-spanning novel.

Listen

  1. Spotify Wrapped. As irritating as it is to have my own data dissected by algorithm and then neatly repackaged for my own consumption…I love Wrapped. Bundled up with the obvious are the oddities—the things I forgot I listened to and loved from back at the beginning of the year.
  2. Very Best of the Pogues. The Pogues. RIP Shane—I spent a fun weekend revisiting some old favorites.

Life

  1. First week of a new job. There is nothing stranger than the first day in a new office job. Everyone else is caught up in their knowledge work, while you are stuck in orientation calls and/or not really doing anything.
