On 7 things from last week (10/16/23)

  1. Annular eclipse. For those lucky enough to see it, it really was something. Not quite a total eclipse, of course, but something that still made you stop and wonder at the universe.
  2. Chuck Feeney. The obituary in the New York Times for Chuck Feeney, duty-free shopping businessman and philanthropist, did an odd thing to me: It made me cry. It’s shocking how rare a person like Chuck Feeney is in our world—a man who made a fortune and then, while still alive, gave it all away.
  3. The Federal-Colfax cloverleaf. I spent some time wondering about Denver’s traffic infrastructure.
  4. Ghosts. I’m not the biggest fan of seasonal decor…but hanging a couple of cheap “ghosts” in the trees in the front of our house has had the whole family giggling.
  5. Doug Paisley. The rare Spotify algorithm recommendation that I’ve been charmed by. Excited to read the lyrics of this purported Townes Van Zandt-ian Canadian.
  6. Hayes Carll. Is a genius. And I’ve missed listening to him the past few years. Missed an entire album!
  7. Pitchfork’s Grammy nominations. Pitchfork offered their more high-brow take on what the Grammys should nominate but won’t, and I spent more than a few hours getting lost in unfamiliar albums.
