Wake-up songs. The documentary Good Night Oppy is fine—but my family did steal something awesome from it: wake-up songs. Many mornings, apparently, when “waking up” the rovers, the team at NASA would play a “wake up song.” Is there anything better than blasting AC/DC or Fleetwood Mac at 6:45 in the morning? (No.)
Venus. Loved seeing a bright, bright Venus in the early morning sky.
Jim Croce. Ted Gioia called out that this week marked the 50th anniversary of Croce’s death, so I listened to “Time in a Bottle” and “Operator” about that many times each.
Commutes. I remembered—after three days in a row in the office—why I don’t miss them.
Neighbors. Hanging out with neighbors is the quaint version of suburbia I’d like to live in.
Valley of Heart’s Delight (Margo Cilker). An astonishing album of songwriting, especially the killer “I Remember Carolina.”
“What I Like About You.” This song just doesn’t get old. It also makes for a great little improv exercise: “What I like about _____ is that they ______!”
