On argument as a whetstone for our minds

The more I have read and thought about argument recently, the more eager I am to have them.

Wait, that sounds aggressive. Let me start again.

I am scared of arguments. Who likes an argument? The quickening heartbeat, the loosed tempers, the sweating… It’s not often a pleasant experience.

But it didn’t always have to be that way. Argument, I have learned, can be something other than exquisite torture, so long as you have a different frame of mind.

An argument presents an opportunity to:

  • Figure out what you (really) think.
  • Put yourself in someone else’s shoes.

A good argument sharpens the mind. And we need this, living as we do in our little media bubbles with our self-serving algorithms and our digital buffets of entertainment options. A dull mind feels never easier to have, and argument is a window that looks out.
