On knowing what a 2×4 is

I mean, it’s a piece of wood, right?

This is me, about a year ago.

Well, maybe I’m overstating the ignorance. It wasn’t so dire as that. I could probably pick a 2×4 out of a lineup or, you know, a scrap bin.

But to explain what was meant by “2” and “4”?

Nope, not really. The obvious answer is inches, but that’s not quite right. (Unless we’re talking rough cut, that is.)

The actual dimensions? Couldn’t have told you.

But I know now. It only took an hour of wandering the lumber section of Home Depot. (Plus some naive Googling.)

And that shift away from cluelessness gives me some hope in my state of non-handiness.

There is the possibility of learning out there. No one knows what a 2×4 is from birth—you need to be told.
