On a whim, I picked up Real World Adobe InDesign CC at the library a few months ago.
It turns out that the bulky 2013 publication—it’s over a decade old!—was not in high demand in the Jeffco Public Library system. It sat, unread, for many weeks on my kitchen counter, literally gathering dust as the library’s auto-renewal system kept it in my possession.
There was ego to the non-reading, I admit: I didn’t think there was much for me to learn. (Aside from GREP styles, but that was a known unknown.)
…And I was wrong!
I was very wrong, and gladly so.
I just spent several hours tweaking the typography of an InDesign document and was astonished at how much cleaner and more efficient I had made it, with the dated but still valid advice of a bulky print guide.
If I push my ego aside, I can admit: there’s plenty more for me to learn about InDesign. Just because I’m the resident “expert” in my firm doesn’t mean that my knowledge pool isn’t shallow compared with the broader ocean of expertise.
GREP styles ahead, I hope!
