On joy in your child’s joy

We were to hibachi last night for the second-ever time with our toddler. I don’t think he was as impressed on the second go-round, but he was still transfixed by the showmanship of the “onion volcano” and the spinning egg (brought to within inches of his face by the cook).

And I was transfixed by him.

Before I became a parent, I would have rolled my eyes at claims like this:

There are fewer more satisfying activities than seeing your child experience pure joy.

In fact, I can now see how pursuit of these activities motivates a sizable chunk of modern parenthood.

It’s the reason we have petting zoos and splash pads and Touch-a-Truck Days with the local fire department. Child-specific or -centric activities exist partly to generate that moment of seeing your kid have a blast.

Of finding joy in your child’s joy.
