On Garden of the Gods and monotheism

Residents of the Denver metro area have our suspicions about Colorado Springs, our neighbor to the south. With its surfeit of megachurches, religious right advocacy organizations, and military bases, “the Springs” (as we call it) has a certain reputation.

A recent news story only deepened the fringe perception:

Garden of Gods signs vandalized — again — as park staffers struggle to manage 4 million visitors: “Some people just have a problem with the ‘S’”

Wait, what was vandalized?

Before clicking on the headline link, I couldn’t imagine what it was talking about. A “problem with the ‘S'”?

But the photo made it clear: someone in the Springs has a problem with the “s” in “Gods.” As in, they are so offended by the implication of polytheism in the Springs. (That the “Gods” is clearly a mythical reference and not commentary on the Christian God is lost on the vandal.)

Garden of the Gods

My first reaction was to laugh—isn’t it absurd that someone found a letter so offensive? My second reaction was to worry—isn’t it scary that someone broke out a chisel and defaced a public sign under cover of darkness?
