On wanting a better understanding of rhetoric

Rhetoric is one of those subject areas I whiffed on as I cruised through high school and college. I missed out on others, too—economics, statistics, sociology, logic, geology, and many others—but rhetoric is one I think about.

And—writing for a living (or part of one, anyway)—I’ve felt a little self-conscious about this gap in my education.

So, I’m embarking on a weekly program of self-education. I’m looking to learn about one rhetorical device each week.

For how long? I have no idea. How many rhetorical devices? Beats me.

My goal is to learn enough about rhetoric to feel that it’s had some practical bearing on my life—that I will begin to recognize devices when I see them out in the world or—even better!—begin to use them myself.
