On 7 things from last week (3/20/23)

  1. The Burgess Boys by Elizabeth Strout. I’m on a tour, I’ve decided, of Strout’s published work—this remains achievable—her total output reached only nine books. The latest I read is The Burgess Boys, a story of sibling dysfunction with the state-of-America political asides and fraught family tensions of a Franzen novel.
  2. St. Dominic’s Preview (Van Morrison). My knowledge of Van Morrison’s discography drops off after Moondance. This 1972 album is a gem, though, especially the soulful first track “Jack Wilson Said (I’m in Heaven When You Smile).”
  3. Imperial Chinese. Hands down, the best Chinese food I’ve yet found in Colorado!
  4. Girls. Like many peer millennials, apparently (my wife and I were surprised by that New York Times article on the resurgent popularity of the series), we are rewatching Girls. More empathy, less judgment, this time around. Maybe we’re just getting older?
  5. Catherine Called Birdy. Wondering what Lena Dunham has been up to, we checked out this sweet adaptation of a beloved YA novel about a girl growing up in medieval England.
  6. Carry Me Back Radio Show Episode. My wife and I hosted a folk show on our college radio station a decade ago. Out of a dozen recorded episodes, only a single one survives to the present day. A blast from the past to hear us chattering away about folk music history!
  7. Top Golf. As absurd as Top Golf can seem, it’s a great afternoon hang.
