On 7 things from last week (3/6/23)

  1. The Magician’s Land (Lev Grossman). I concluded my reread of Lev Grossman’s The Magicians trilogy last week and remain impressed with the world-building…but felt that the concluding book fell a little flat.
  2. The O.C. (Season 1). It was silly to think that The O.C. would remain character-driven through the end of Season 1. Twenty some-odd episodes in, the seams start to show—plot mechanics that treats characters as playthings rather than people.
  3. Workin’ on the World (Iris DeMent). Iris DeMent’s “Let The Mystery Be” is one of my favorite songs, so I was delighted to have a new collection of original DeMent tracks to dig into. The title track, which kicks off the album, is one of the most potent (and hopeful) political songs I’ve heard in years.
  4. Ni Es Lo Mismo Ni Es Igual (Juan Luis Guerra y 440). I think I first heard Guerra’s work as a cover song on a Cafe Tacuba album. I listened to Guerra’s 1998 album a lot last week, especially the lovely third track “La Hormiguita.”
  5. Blackbelly Market. My wife and I enjoyed a delicious, red-meat-heavy anniversary dinner out at this Boulder market/restaurant. My wife discovered this place because it’s owned by chef Hosea Rosenberg, winner of Season 5 of Top Chef. (She’s been watching a lot of Top Chef on her maternity leave.)
  6. Anniversary texts. Nothing like getting texts from family and friends congratulating you on being married!
  7. Making a workbench. My nascent woodworking hobby has seen its first completed project: a workbench! Now, onto using it for other projects…
